BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. -

Travelers beware: you might need to make alternative plans this September. The Tri-Cities Regional Airport will be closing their entire runway and cancelling all flights for two weekends that month.

We found out this is the first time in about 25 years the runway will need to be repaved.

The project has been ongoing for some time during the overnight hours, but Tri-Cities Regional Airport officials told us from Friday evening to Monday morning on September 13 through September 16, and September 20 through September 23 the runway will be closed so the project can be finished.

"We tried to close it at the least painful time, but we have to have a certain amount of dry weather. The fewer number of passengers [the better], even though we know there's not a good weekend to close the runway," said Melissa Thomas, the airport's marketing director.

Officials said the $14 million project will improve the safety of the airstrip for all future flights.
