Teachers train for new state standards
Some Tennessee teachers are spending time in classrooms this week training for new standards in math and reading.
Math teachers are getting together at Dobyns Bennett High School in Kingsport learning how to implement a new set of benchmarks for the 2014-2015 school year.
About 30,000 teachers across the state are taking part in the training.
"These trainings are really about helping teachers feel more comfortable and go more deeply into what these new standards look like in their content area, so in Math and in English-language arts so they can then, through the course of the year, help their students," says Tony Plunkett, site leader for training.
The new standards being adopted in 45 states are described as a set of higher expectations in Math and English aimed at using more critical thinking and problem solving skills.
