Tennessee halting lane closures for holiday weekend

Published On: Jul 01 2013 04:54:55 PM CDT
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

If you are planning to get out of town for the upcoming Fourth of July holiday, you won't have to worry about construction slowing you down on highways in the Volunteer State.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation says it will suspend all construction-related lane closures on interstates and state routes.  The suspension begins at six o'clock Wednesday morning (July 3rd) and lasts through six o'clock Monday morning, July 8th.  TDOT says the suspension is to make way for the high capacity of holiday drivers expected on the roads.

Officials also say, while lane closure activity will be stopped, workers may still be on site and reduced speed limits still apply.  If you're convicted of speeding through work zones, you could face fines between $250 and $500, plus court fees.

AAA predicts more than 40 million people will travel 50 miles or more away from home this holiday weekend.
