NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

According to new research, the Volunteer State has the lowest debt ratio in the nation.

We took a look at the numbers and here's what we can tell you. The study calculated each state's net tax supported debt and unfunded pension liabilities.

They then compared those numbers, against the state's personal income level. Tennessee's ratio of debt was 1.8 percent

No other state had a ratio below 2.2 percent.

Researchers say the reason that ratio is so low is because of wise financing by state legislators.
