JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -

After more than 60 years in the Tri-Cities building market, Bolton Block Company has permanently closed its Johnson City, Tenn. manufacturing operations effective immediately.

The company has served both residential and commercial building markets in the region since 1951, manufacturing concrete block at its 1711 East Main St. location in Johnson City and later adding sand and mortar to its line of products, as well as brick distribution.

According to Rich Sells, president of Bolton Block, the company’s assets are being purchased by General Shale, which will handle all of Bolton’s incoming orders for concrete and masonry products going forward.

Sells tells News 5 that many Bolton Block workers will have jobs with the new company, but six workers will be cut.

"The decision to permanently cease operations was a difficult one, and comes after lengthy and thorough consideration," says Sells. "Economic conditions over the past few years have significantly impacted the construction industry, and our market has continued to decline. However, we are confident the transition of orders to General Shale will be seamless and our customers will continue to receive the best in products and service. We will always be grateful to our employees, customers and vendors for their friendship, loyalty and support."

"We look forward to providing the same high-quality product offerings and services to which Bolton customers are accustomed, and we will do everything we can to ensure a smooth changeover," adds Dick Green, CEO of General Shale. "Our professional staff will be glad to process orders, answer questions and help in any way they can."

Bolton Block customers may contact General Shale at 423-952-4135.
