TVA wants your opinion on houseboat rules

House Boat Rules
KINGSPORT, Tenn. -

Many people in the region have a summer home that just happens to float on the water.

Houseboats are popular in area lakes like Boone and South Holston.

The Tennessee Valley Authority is concerned that houseboats and so called "floating houses' are getting out of control.

At a Monday evening meeting at Warriors Path State Park, the TVA was asking for public input on the issue.

The concern is that floating houses  are for habitation and not recreational boating.

TVA also has issues with sanitation and electrical access for these floating structures.

TVA's Jim Hopson said, "TVA has a concern about this because, of course, our rules and regulations never were intended to look at, what amounts to, a home on the water, and of course, the water is owned by all. So we're asking for residents throughout the Tennessee valley to provide us with their opinion".

Hopson says after collecting  the input from the public they will assess what needs to be done to protect the water quality and keep everyone safe.
The process is expected to take about two years.
