UMOJA
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -

If you're looking for something to do this weekend and want to broaden your cultural horizons, the Umoja Festival kicks off on Friday in Downtown Johnson City.

Umoja is Swahili for "unity" and the festival aims to bring unique cultures together in a fun environment, while providing education, food, and music.

Director of Redevelopment for the Washington County Economic Development Council Shannon Castillo says the festival is a great representation of America as a whole. "We're a big melting pot. We all come from different ethnicities," she said. "It's good to learn to come together, learn to have unity with one another and enjoy our differences and the things that make us unique."

The Umoja Festival kicks off Friday at 3 p.m. with the opening ceremony.

A parade is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday.

The festival ends at 9:30 Saturday night.
