Unicoi County Sheriff's Deputy Kenneth "Daniel" Honeycutt is due in court at 9:30 a.m. in Erwin Thursday on a charge of domestic assault.
Sheriff Mike Hensley told News 5 WCYB he obtained an arrest warrant from Circuit Court Clerk Darren Shelton and took Honeycutt into custody at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The arrest came after Honeycutt's wife went to the emergency room for minor injuries and reported being attacked by her husband on November 12th at their home.
Deputy Honeycutt is a 7-year-veteran of the sheriff's office. Sheriff Hensley suspended Honeycutt without pay pending the outcome of the investigation.
District Attorney General Tony Clark will be responsible for prosecuting the case.
Sheriff Hensley stated, "As the elected Sheriff, I have a duty to provide protection for all citizens of the county and furthermore I have the sworn duty to vindicate victims by holding individuals who violate the law accountable. In this unfortunate event, the violator happened to be one of my deputies. This case quickly evolved from an internal investigation to a criminal investigation. As I have stated before, my deputies are not above or exempt from the law. It is my duty to enforce the law, and I have done that".
