EMORY, Va. -

News 5 WCYB reported Thursday that Emory & Henry tabbed veteran coach Curt Newsome to take over its football program. Newsome was introduced Friday on campus.

According to Director Of Athletics Myra Sims, the search included a short list of coaches with ties to the program.

Newsome is a 1982 Emory & Henry graduate.

"It is good to be home," Newsome told News 5 WCYB.

"It doesn't get any more special than that."

Newsome is coming from James Madison University where he has served as the assistant head coach and offensive line coach this past season. It was his second stint with the Dukes. He was also part of the 2004 National Championship team.

Newsome is also a former Virginia Tech assistant, spending seven seasons with the Hokies.

He said he plans to recruit local players from Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee.

"You've got to take care of your own backyard. I know there's still good football in Southwest Virginia."

Veteran coach Lou Wacker believes recruiting the local players will help get the program back on track.

"Draw a circle," Wacker told News 5 WCYB.

"Recruit Southwest Virginia and East Tennessee and you'll be okay."

Newsome told News 5 WCYB he is also open to playing local schools, such as East Tennessee State's new program.

"They'd be all true freshman so that's why we'd like to play them."
