East Tennessee State has hired Carl Torbush as the Buccaneers' new football coach.

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -

East Tennessee State has hired Carl Torbush as the Buccaneers' new football coach to oversee restarting a program that was shut down a decade ago.

Hall of Fame coach Phil Fulmer - who has helped lead the search - introduced Torbush at a news conference Friday afternoon at the Millennium Center in Johnson City.

The 61-year-old has been a head coach at North Carolina and Louisiana Tech, and he also worked as defensive coordinator at Alabama, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Kansas, Texas A&M and North Carolina.

"Those 20-year-olds haven't been sixty, so I have about forty years of experience of wisdom and knowledge I feel like I can give them," Torbush said.

He has the task of restarting a program shut down in 2003 because of the financial cost of the sport with the Buccaneers starting play again in 2015.

"Virginia tech and Clemson and Tennessee are all great places," Fulmer said.

"We're not trying to compete against those folks. We're trying to give the people of East Tennessee an opportunity to be a part of something really special."

Students voted earlier this year to restart football even with a $125 fee per student per semester helping pay the tab.

The Buccaneers also are set to return to the Southern Conference in July 2014.

Torbush will begin recruiting players to enroll in 2014. They will kick-off with a limited schedule in 2015.
