Bristol native and NASCAR President Mike Helton returned to Bristol Motor Speedway Wednesday night.
He participated in an informal discussion ahead of this week's NASCAR races.
The John Battle graduate and Bristol, Va. native shared several stories about his career and offered insight into what goes on behind-the-scenes at NASCAR's highest level.
Helton explained that the first race he ever watched at BMS, he watched from a hilltop with his father. He also once sold programs for the race track.
"It is always fun to come back to Bristol," Helton told News 5 WCYB.
"When I drive into the facility here I shake my head. I'm amazed at how this facility has come up and what it has done for so many years."
Helton was asked about the idea of possibly moving the Bristol Spring race to a later date on the schedule.
"We naturally want to go to a race track and not have weather challenges. We are open-minded to that. When you run thirty-six weekends between Valentine's Day and Thanksgiving it is hard to move one without affecting multiple other weekends."
Helton says he is still a season-ticket holder at his hometown track.
