Tusculum College has local hero on campus

Tusculum's Jeremy Wagner is a veteran, and a starting offensive lineman.

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -

On Saturday the Tusculum Pioneers host Catawba and it will be "Local Heroes Day" at Pioneer Field.

The school is inviting all law enforcement, fire and emergency medical professionals and members of the Armed Forces to attend the game free of charge.

The Pioneers will have their own hero on the field too, playing in the game.

Jeremy Wagner, 26, is a veteran and a starting offensive lineman.

During his sophomore year at Tusculum College, he decided to join the Army.

"I mean I didn't know what I was getting myself into honestly," Wagner told News 5 WCYB.

He went on to serve two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, earning two Purple Hearts and the Solder's Medal For Heroism.

Five years later he is back on campus majoring in special education and wearing a football uniform.

"I look at football as a release."

Wagner, also a husband and father of two, is enjoying his return to campus. He is majoring in special education.

"I have people that love me here, it's just a blessing to be here."
