Vet wants to help ease pain of losing pets

Losing a pet can be like losing a member of your family, but a local veterinarian is hoping to make the process a little bit easier by starting a new business that provides at home euthanasia when the time comes.
It’s something most pet owners don't want to discuss, a topic that for many is just too sad to think about; but when the time comes for a family's pet to pass, Dr. Sarah Francis is hoping her new company will help ease the pain.
"It just creates a more private grieving setting and a more comfortable one for the pet and the owner," explains Dr. Francis.
She started Loving Hands Home Euthanasia in November 2012.
It's a service dog owner Ralph Wheeler relied on in August of this year when his beloved Shar-Pei Emma was too sick to go on. "It was a very simple, peaceful, loving thing," says Wheeler.
Wheeler says if there is a positive outcome in such a sad situation, it's that his pup spent her last moments at the home she loved. "She's my best friend, she's family. I didn't want her to suffer anymore, to be anxious. I didn't want her to be afraid, and she wasn't."
Dr. Francis says others are realizing the benefits to the at-home service. She's seen a growing need from pet owners. "These are pets that are suffering, often times for weeks or months, and usually with the help of their regular vet they've come to the decision that this is the best choice for their pets," she said.
While Dr. Francis will be the first to admit her job isn't easy, she does find comfort knowing the situation often brings peace for the owners and their companions.
Dr. Sarah Francis is a licensed veterinarian who practices part-time at an office in Bristol, Tennessee. The cost of the at-home service ranges between $150 and $300.
